I am a Canadian citizen living here for over 4 years. I need to apply for visitor visa for my sister who is a physician in India. The thing is she is currently working right now. I will use her employment details to show ties to India, but as soon as her visa is approved, I want her to quit her job and come to stay with me for 4-5 months. We have not met each other for over a decade and we need couple of months time to stay together now (due to personal reasons) and travel around in Canada and US. I am 41 years old single and my sister is 43 years old single. So we are well established in our careers.

I will be providing letter of invitation, proof of funds (enough to cover her entire stay).
  • When I apply for tourist visa for sister, how long is it usually granted for? Is it only for the duration that you apply for? then I cant apply for 5 months because then I wont be able to show that her job has given her that much time off. If I apply for visa for only a couple of weeks (2-4 weeks), will the visa then be granted for only that duration?
  • Do we have to attach proof of employment along with leave details? Can we just show a current employer letter, but not provide any details on leave dates? We don't want the employer to know about the upcoming travel plans.
  • How do I apply for multiple entry? I am a citizen and plan to be here long. I would like my sister to continue visiting me every year for at least few weeks each visit going forward. When you apply for a sibling - is the visa granted for multiple entries or single entry?
  • I am reading that a lot of sibling's visa is getting rejected -is it better to show that she is covering her travel using her own funds? or is it better if I show that I am covering it? My sister does not have that much funds to show. I don't want it to get rejected due to lack of funds.
  • Also she is single, and has never traveled outside India. What documents can we show to show strong reasons to return? Apartment rental agreement is one we can show, but we dont have anything else.
Anyone who applied for their siblings - how long duration you apply for, and how long did you get he visa for? Even if I apply for 3 weeks and can get visa for at least 3 months that will be great.

So for her to get approved she needs to show:

- ties to return: job letter with approved leave and stated income, rental lease with paid rent, business, income property (because she is single with no children she needs to show very strong ties)
- funds: her bank statements (cash) that match her length of visit. Yours do not need to be considered.
- travel history to UK, NZ, AUS or US
- reasons to travel (you provide letter of invitation)

She doesn’t apply for a multi visa. She doesn’t ask how long she can stay. IRCC decides. If approved, she will either have a stamp in her passport on length of stay (could be two week). If not stamped then she can stay up to 6 months.

Your being a citizen has no bearing on her application except that she is single and has no ties to home country. She must show her own funds or it shows that she cannot afford to visit Canada. She has a weak profile given she has no ties to return or travel history but she is a doctor so that is good.
