The well-known, and very outspoken, former British MP, George Galloway, has just recently announced his attempt to sue Canada’s immigration minister. Apparently George says that he is suing the minister over an attempt to ban him from entering the country for a Canadian speaking tour.
Reports say that one statement that was served to the Canada Immigration Minister, Jason Kenney, said that he abused his official powers by banning Galloway from Canada back in 2009. This statement goes on to claim that Galloway is seeking some $1.5 million in damages.
For those that do not remember, Galloway was planning on visiting Canada back in 2009 to make a series of speeches about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, these speeches never came to be, because Kenney actually banned him from entering the country. He said that the British MP had financially supported the Palestinian group Hamas. This is a group that Ottawa considers to be a terrorist organization.
Due to all of this, Galloway said that Kenney’s claims caused him “18 months of hell.” On top of that, Galloway said that he had his personal security threatened because of it.
The lawyer that is representing Galloway, Louis Sokolov, said that the minister banned Galloway to silence him on the false pretense that his client was a threat to national security. He then went on to say that his reputation was tarnished, not only in Britain, but around the world. He will certainly argue that he lost his job, at least in part, as a result of what the immigration minister said.
Only time will tell if Galloway has a solid case against the immigration minister or not. However, some experts are saying that things are looking up for him in terms of winning this case.
