Ok but what does the 5 years means then?
My friend in QC just got hers for her boyrfriend, and she said something like it was good for 5years for 6mths per yr

Though I didnt personally experience this, but based on one of my friends experience...the 5 years is the validity of the visa which the TRV holder can use to enter Canada. The Immigration at the port can and may give a maximum of 6 months to a person with a TRV to stay in Canada (he/she may also say the TRV holder can only stay for two months. It is at the discretion of the officer at the port). If a TRV holder intends to stay longer than 6 months, the holder must apply for an extension of the stay (not the visa) regardless if the visa is good for another 4 years (or the TRV holder can just exit Canada and enter again).

To answer your question...as far as my friend's experience...NO, her TRV was not taken away just because she was under sponsorship for a PR.
