I was originally admitted to a 2-year master's program at a designated learning institution starting fall of 2024. Unfortunately, the Letter of Introduction to my study permit and my wife's SOWP arrived a tiny bit late, and we just weren't able to make it last fall. The program doesn't offer deferred enrollment either, so I applied again this December and got readmitted to the same program for fall 2025.
However, with the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) that expires in August 2026 already stamped on our passports, I have a few questions regarding my next steps:
However, with the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) that expires in August 2026 already stamped on our passports, I have a few questions regarding my next steps:
- We don't have to apply for a new study permit for myself and a new Spouse Open Work Permit for my wife again given that I'm basically admitted to the exact same academic program, right? Do some of the recent changes in immigration policies affect the answer to this question?
- Will I receive a study permit at the border with an expiration date the same as that of my current TRV, which is August 2026 or it'll align with the end date of my academic program, which is summer 2027 for now?
- I'm aware that we'd have to extend our study permit & SOPW once we're in Canada depending on the answer to the last question, but what about the TRVs expiring in August 2026? Do we have to extend them later as well? Or it doesn't matter as long as we stay in Canada?
