I am also interested to know.
I think it depends on the location,so I am told.
We should wait for others to reply.

Of course they can, you will have to pay the 1st and last months rent (depending on the province) or a damage deposit. you really don't see many people living in tents on the streets because they are immigrants and no one will rent to them.

Thanks Sr. PMM

.
DestinationBC, we have been made aware that credit history is asked for when people seek apartment for rent.
The question is raised to clarify this issue.
Please refrain from using terms like "Crazy"
Understand that new immigrants have many anxieties in their mind before moving.

I was able to rent an apartment. All I gave them was my bank statement and my approval letter from CIC. I think they double checked with the bank and approved my application.

For heaven sake You are not buying an apartment or a house that your credit history is checked for mortgage.

They need your credential not credit History.

Most landlords ask for "rental" history and not credit history.

To compensate for lack of rental history, most landlords would be happy to receive post dated cheques and personal reference. But this is all assuming that you are not competing to rent a specific dwelling with a more qualified applicant.

Per my personal experience, landlords would rather rent to applicants with "no" rental or credit history than rent to those with "negative/bad" history.

In short, be ready with your post dated cheques, personal reference, or better still, show them your letter of employment if you already found a job. Renting a place is usually not a problem

DestinationBC,
I can understand the way you feel but please do not be angry or annoyed with nobody.

Of course some question can get you "mad" as in real mad from pple on this forum but keep your calm and answer them as simple and cautious as you can and if your patiense can not allow you please kindly keep mute.

Am just advising bcos many readers here would think you are not matured to take shit. Remember that pple measure your maturity and greatness by how much insults you can stomach and let go...it never meant that you are a weakling or a fool. Remeber Qorax, Rocky and president Obama the great not to mention Great nelson Mandela who had the opportunity of retaliating the wrong did to him (27 yrs inmprisonment) but never did a thing.

God bless us all.

Thanks for your positive and high spirited response.I shall heed to it.

I agree with you but and I try not to loose my cool but this question was from some one who is staying in the US

Believe me, if I have my PR visa in my hand, I would have asked the same question. Its a valid question cos of the stories we hear about credit history etc being the basis for getting anything done.

So pls indulge us
