Did you apply inland or outland?

If you applied outland, to get a work permit you will have to get a LMIA from an employer.

If inland, you can get an open work permit after stage 1. Currently posted as taking 13 months.

You need a work permit of some sort to work.

You will have to wait for your wife to be approved as your Sponsor in order to apply for an open work permit. Depending on when you filed your application, it is currently taking 13 months to reach sponsorship approval (Stage 1). If you just recently filed, then you will be waiting a long while to get a work permit based on sponsor approval. You could try to find a job with an employer willing to do the LMIA route with you but those are few and far between. Otherwise you will have to wait to go to work as you MUST have a work permit in order to work in Canada, anything else is considered illegal work and can/will cause your PR application to be denied.
