Dear respected seniors:

I know someone has probably asked the same question before. Please allow me to confirm this again.
My question is simple. If I have lived in Canada more than 1095 days, am I able to apply for citizenship in Canada and then wait for the test in my home country?

Or I can just apply it through VO located in my home country?

thank you

Yes, after 1095 days of living in Canada as a PR within a 4 year period. Time in Canada before getting PR will count at the rate of 1/2 day towards citizenship per day of staying.

You may leave after you apply but make sure that they know your address or keep an address in Canada that somebody is checking. They will give you maybe 2 weeks notice for test and oath so you may have to go back to Canada on short notice to do that. Re-scheduling can be done but you should try to avoid it if at all possible.

Dear Leon

Thank you very much for your help. It's very informative.

One more question please.

Assuming my PR is expired by the time I come back to Canada for my citizenship test, do I need re-apply it again? Or I can just come back to Canada with my passport? I am a Taiwanese national who doesn't need a visa to visit Canada.
thank you

If you still meet the residency requirements, it is not your PR that is expired, only the card. The PR itself does not expire.

You should be able to get in to Canada with your passport, expired PR card and/or landing papers. You could also apply for a travel document at the Canadian embassy or consulate closest to you.

Dear Leon

Again, thank you for your help.

(1)
Assuming I have notified CHC I moved back to Taiwan, will they send a study guild to me in Taiwan for citizenship test?
(2)
Out of my curiousity, in order to grant citizenship of Canada, am I required to attend the oath(ceremony) after test is done?

1) If not, you can download it from their website.

2) Yes, you are not a citizen until you have attended the oath ceremony.
