My mom is a PR and landed recently. She has not much income on her own, will be living with us, and is financially dependent on us. Wondering whether we can claim her as my dependent for the income tax purposes.

Thank you,

Sridhar.

How old is your mother? Is she disabled?

She is 82. Not disabled, though needs a cane to walk.

Thanks, Sridhar.

To the best of my knowledge, you can claim her as a dependent since she is over 65 and living with you.

Are you married or with common-law spouse? If yes, you can't claim your parent as dependent

I don't think that's true.

I am talking about eligible dependent:

line 305

I guess 306 is for impaired and 315 is for not impaired, you can't claim both.

I am in similar situation. My mom, dad and sister have arrived in Canada as new immigrants. They have no income and they live with me in my home. My sister is autistic.

From the research I have done, pie_Vancouver is correct. Because I am married and live with my spouse and claiming her as eligible dependent, I cannot claim anyone else as eligible dependent.

Since my dad is older than 65 and my sister is autistic, I can claim family caregiver amount for both of them. My mom is 60 so I cannot claim caregiver amount for her.

I do have a few questions which I have been getting conflicted answers:

1) Can my mom, dad and sister file NETFILE tax return or does it have to be paper-based tax return. They have never filed taxes before.

2) Because, I am claiming caregiver amount for my dad and disability amount from my sister, would it be BETTER, if I send my tax return paper-based along with their tax returns? does that matter? Would it be better if CRA receives my parents and sisters tax return before mine so they can see what I am claiming?

3) When my parents and sister arrived in Canada, according to BC law, there is waiting period for getting medical coverage. So I purchased private emergency insurance. That was about $1000. I am wondering If I can claim this as medical expense on my tax return?

Thank you

1. Yes
2. Use netfile, easier and fast
3. No, only the premiums paid for yourself, spouse and minor children
