Can i change my visa status from visitor to work permit?

I've sent my application for permanent residence (common-law class) on Dec 15th, 2009
It's been about 8 months already but i haven't heard anything yet, is it normal to take this long?
I have no idea about what's going on with my application now
so first question, is there any websites i can check it? (Sorry i am new here)

And my visitor status is expiring soon...
actually i've extended it more than 4 times already since i entered Canada
but this time, i want to change it to work permit if i can...
so my second question, is it possible to change my visa status from visitor to work permit now?

It just seems to take too long and i wish i can get work permit and work until getting permanent residence.

You applied inland?

-For work visa you have to have a job offer and go through a whole process of proving you won't take any Canadian opportunity of employment . . .
But if you applied Inland, you can wait till you reach the AIP(you may be almost there since it's been 8 months) when you will be able to apply for an Open Work Permit, which you won't have to prove anything, just apply.
-As you have extended your visa 4 times you may have a Client ID number, with such you can check your application status(a.k.a e-CAS) on CIC website.

yes i have a Client ID number but i still couldn't check my application status (a.k.a e-CAS) on CIC website.
But there is one weird thing...
one of my friend who sent the application 2 months later than me already can check her application status, then why not me?... :'(

And i am wondering... normally how long it takes to get the final approval after AIP
and also how long it takes to process for an open work permit?

Yjl, Wer couldn't log in for the longest time. I kept trying all differnet combinations of info then one day it worked. Make sure you punch in everything right. Type the client ID in including the dash. Let me know if you get it to work

Yes kelKel, finally i could check it on the CIC website and it says they started processing mine last march.
I feel a bit safe now cuz at least i checked that they have my application and work on it.
So i'll keep waiting, and as i haven't been requested for any extra documents, hopefully everything goes smooth.

I'm glad you figured it out. Good Luck! I'm sure you will hear something soon. The processing times changed to 8-9 months and it says they're processing apps recieved up to November 28/09. So I would say you're almost there! Fingers crossed for you!
