Hy,

How can the visa type be changed if I am not happy with the current job?
I came under 1 year program as Young Professional to British Columbia.
It will expire in October 2014.
However, would like to quit my current job and find another one.
Is there any way I can go to another city and find other job while stil in Canada?
My favourit destination is Vancouver...
The thing is that under this type of visa I am tyed to the specific employer.....so how can I change the job if I am not happy at the workplace?
Immigration services here in town told me that I need LMO, but that needs time to obtain and no employer is willing to wait so long.
Any help is needed and more than welcome, please!

Tnx.

1. You can't apply for a new IEC until 3 months after your present IEC expires and it must be in a different category.
2. If you want to work at a new job, the employer, must obtain an approved LMO after advertising the position before s/he applies. 12 weeks or more for approval. Then you can apply for non IEC work permit.
3. So unless your prospective employer is willing to wait, you may be out of luck.

Hi,

I am a German student doing an Internship in Canada at the moment. I have a work permit under the Coorp Program (Internship) which expires in February. My current employer offered me a job starting in January, ending in September. Now I have a couple of questions.

A: Can I extend my current work permit (because you can normally get it for one year, I got it only for 4 month, because my contract was only from September – end of January? And could my employer give me a full time, payed position, if I only have the Internship work permit?

B: Can I apply for the Young Professional Program to get a work permit from January to September 2014? Do I need to have a finished degree to apply for the program?

C: Do you have any other ideas, how I could get a work permit, so that I can take the job and stay in Canada?
Thanks you so much appreciated!

No, you can't extend and IEC work permit. But you can apply for a different IEC visa, if the COOP one was your first IEC visa. As a German citizen you can apply twice under two different IEC categories.

B: Can I apply for the Young Professional Program to get a work permit from January to September 2014? Do I need to have a finished degree to apply for the program?

You can use the working holiday program as well. This would give you a 12 months open work permit that allows you to work for
any employer, whereas young professional visas are bound to a specific employer.

You'll have to wait until the IEC program for 2014 opens and then apply for either the Working Holiday or Young Professional visa.
Not sure if you can get it approved by the end of January.

Yes, as a German citizen you can apply twice, but under different categories, for an IEC visa. Haven't heard of
an option to extend the validity of IEC visas.

That's the problem, you can't. The program should open end of this year, but you never know when
they actually open it.

too bad :( my employer is kind of pissed and stressed already , me included ;)
I hear ya, been there too. But there's no reason to stress yourself, you still have a valid work permit until january.
There's no guarantee that the IEC program openen until then, and/or you get your visa approved. Worst case you will have to
change your status to visitor for a few weeks and then to worker, after getting the WP approved.

I'm in a similar situation.

The company I have the YP visa for is fairly big. I was wondering if I can change departments, have a similar title and job description though ... I'd be working for a different department but within the same company / employer. I would think they don't really do much of a follow up on YP visas once they are issued but could be wrong? Any experience, please feel free to share :)

Thanks, Mary Anne
