Hello all,

I am an international student who will be leaving to Canada on a study permit soon. I have my brother's family living over there and I have to carry gold jewellery worth less than 10,000CAD to give it to them. Am I allowed on a student permit to carry this? Will I face problem on arrival? Please answer.

Thanks,
Ram

You have to declare if in total you are carrying more than $10,000. So if the jewelry plus whatever else you're carrying is over $10,000, you have to declare it. You won't face troubles, but you will be asked where it came from, etc. If it is not a gift, you may be required to pay taxes if you are giving it to family.

The total worth of jewellery plus everything else I will carry will sum up to less than $10,000. And yes, it is a gift. Should I still prepare any document, carry bills or something? Thanks
