Can I apply for a PRTD if my PR card is still valid?

Did you explain your situation in the Letter of explanation that you had a valid PR card at the time of application and were planning ahead for your travel to Canada? My PR card expires at the end of July and we need to travel to Canada at the start of September. So I'm worried applying when my PR card expires won't give enough time to get the PRTD, which is why I wanted to apply early.

I'm just looking for any help really so that my application has the best chance of success. I'm currently living in the UK (I am a UK citizen) with my Canadian citizen spouse, we have lived here for 2 years, but both previously lived and worked in Canada for 6 years. So I meet the Residency obligation for PR. We plan to move back to Canada in the future, but my spouse is currently studying at university in the UK part time while working, so we are tied to living here for the next few years.
