Hi All,

I have a situation where i see no other option than to land with my family in Canada and leave for US for my business/other matters. ( Dont know if would be able to stay away from my kids for the first time ever). I am a legal resident of U.S and have no problem staying in U.S for extended time but i cannot get U.S Citizenship for my family (at least for few years). My questions is that if my spouse and children stay in Canada and fulfil residence requirements, would there be a problem for them to get canadian citizenship by me (the pricipal applicant) not being there with them for extended time. I know i will loose my PR being away for more than two years, but at least my family will get their citizenship. Once i am comfortable with moving my business to Canda, i can have sponsorship of my family. Please give me your thoughts if you see any immirgation problems down the line in this scenario.

Thanks a lot.

You would not lose your PR until you are away for 3 years total in a 5 year period but your family would not have any problems. If you lose your PR but want it back, your wife can sponsor you back.

Once you all become PR, there is no principal applicant any more. The wife would get her 3 years in Canada and apply for citizenship for herself and the kids if they are under 18. Kids 18 or older would have to apply on their own.
