Hi there,

I'm in Canada working on a temporary visa and I just wanted to know if one can get a study visa to do the CGA designation?
My employer is willing to sponsor part of my studies as they have a tuition reimbursement plan. I wanted to know as a foreign worker can i get a visa to study the CGA and can I work for my employer part-time while doing this or will I only be able to work for them once I've completed the program?

Any input on this is much appreciated!

Hi, if you are required by the Association of CGAs in Canada in your province to go to school to get educational credits to qualify you for CGA training, then the school where you choose to go can issue you a letter which you can submit with an application for a study permit. Now, what I know is that , as a general rule, a student on a permit can only work off-campus (no LMO required) after 6 months of full-time study.

Because your status right now as a worker where presumably an LMO was secured by your employer prior to hiring you might put you in a different category where perhaps you can continue to work full time for the same employer and at the same time study on a permit. You can try calling the CIC and see if they have a definitive opinion about what you intend to do, but still do your own research as the CIC normally has call center agents who take our calls. Take their advice with a grain of salt but see what they say.
