Hello,

I am a Canadian by decent but is planning to have my child abroad. I understand that my child will not be Canadian and I will have to sponser my child to become a PR then submit a Canadian citizenship application for my child.

1) Can I apply for PR of my Child before the birth?

2) How long does this process usually take?

My husband works abroad and I would like to raise my baby with him. Can we be abroad while the process is on going or do I have to be in Canada?

Hi

1. No, you cannot apply before the birth. You need to include the child's birth certificate, passport, medical etc.

2. No one can say how long exactly. Probably around 8-10 months.

You will need to show proof that you intend to return to Canada when the child's sponsorship is approved. If you don't intend to return anytime soon, then you should wait to apply.

Just suggestions, so you'll need to make the best decision for yourself, your future child and family.

If you will not be living in Canada yet, you should only apply when you all want to return to settle there. You would then apply for your husband with him as the principle applicant, and your child (or children if you have than 1 by then) as his dependent(s).

I assume your husband is not Canadian, so it would not improve matters much if you have the birth of your child in Canada (to be born in Canada is the other way for your child), since you still have to make a future application for your husband anyway to get him PR. Having a dependent child makes no difference to the sponsorship.
