Can a minor child (Canadian citizen) travel to US with an expired Canadian passport + birth certificate?

Hi all,
Here's the situation - the child's passport expired , it takes forever to renew , no appointment available at passport office for an urgent renewal.
Family is travelling via land border using private vehicle for 2 weeks, can a canadian child enter the usa with expired passport + birth certificate?

My kids travel to the US and back via land border with Canadian birth certificates only. I’m not sure if this still work but Im assuming it still does

You are living in a country that accepts foreigners with an expired passport (or even without a passport at all lol) . US Adult Citizens can enter Canada via land border (using private vehicle) only with an "Enhanced Driver's License"..without a passport. US children can enter Canada via land border without a passport too (they only need proof of US citizenship).. so i am wondering if our Canadian kids get the same treatment when going to US via land border, can't find concrete info at this point on the govt. website.

Thanks how old are they? And when they enter last with the birth certificate only?
