Hello,
Myself a BTech Mechanical Engineer fresher from India planing to apply for September 2016 intake for a Mechanical Engineering technologist two year diploma from a Public Canadian College.I chose this stream because its mentioned in the SOL list and I like the practical approach of the stream.
Aim would be to secure a permanent job, possibly Permanent Residency and then higher studies(may be). Some questions.

1) Which are the provinces providing maximum job opportunities in this field?

2)Which are the best public colleges providing diploma programs for this stream?

3) What is the scope of this field?Anything else one should know before taking the plunge?

Any suggestions, tips and information would be welcome and immensely helpful.

Expect a straight refusal if you are applying for a simple diploma after BTech.

Really?
Well, there are advance diploma courses(3 year courses accelerated to 2 years for undergrad degree holders). But my options will be limited to Centennial College as they are the only ones offering Mechanical Engineering Technologist diploma in two years. And I have heard not so good things about them.
Even for the advanced diploma program the requirement is 12th grade so it is equivalent to a diploma? Its just that degree holders can complete the course in 2 years compared to the 3 12th graders need.

Is there any way to check that if I am eligible to apply ?I really like the syllabus of some diploma programs.

dude, you have already completed your Btech which means that you are a engineering now, there's no point in getting into technologist advanced diploma. this will also be understood by the embassy officers and it will be a straight rejection.
BEST OF LUCK

You can apply for Fanshawe College for Practical Elements of Mechanical Engineering, which is a pg program.
If you want you can get a combined offer for Practical Elements of Mechanical engineering + project management which will make your course duration 2 years

Yes.That is another option.
But wont clubbing 2 one year programs lead to complications for post study work permit?I am screwed if I only get one year permit because then I wont be able to pay off my education loans.
And I have no idea about the demand for Project Managers in Canada.

Any info about the Accelerated 2 year advanced diploma in Mechanical engineering technology(design, industrial) offered by Centennial College? They accept BTech degree holders. But I am scared I wont get the international exposure there. The bad ranking of Centennial college in Key Performance Indicator(KPI) Ontario colleges isn't helping either.

If you are looking for 2 year diploma then you can consider the diploma at BCIT which is again a very good option. I applied for one of my student after B.tech Mechanical and he got the visa.

Why not apply for Masters Degree. It is still a two year program and fees are low.

I don't think that there will be a straight refusal, as long as u r not having a long gap.One of my classmate is there in technologist -design, who is now doing his co-op, paying his loans back. Don't expect any international exposure over there in centennial. As far as i know, demand is high for this technologist and technicians, rather than master degree holders from university especially for immigrants who cannot speak like whites.Still if u are eligible and can afford a university education, go for it.Myself, done with PEME from Fanshawe, and i won't recommend it considering less jobs around London. But the college facilities, infrastructure and course are really great. What I have observed here is that, Canada is a paradise for low skilled immigrants like welders, plumbers, mechanics, truck drivers etc.If u are choosing centennial, go for industrial rather than design.
All this are just my opinions only :)

Well,I know some Uni s got lower fees than colleges. But I think they will be more difficult to get into.Although I am an average student with 7.3 CGPA and zero backlogs I am kind of scared that I may not be good enough.I want a job oriented course, cheap, enough free time to do part time jobs and something in which I can excel in.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply.
Yes,I am a 2015 graduate and hence minimum study gap.

I would be happy to be a truck driver ;D but I think I may need PR to do so.

In the Graduate Employment Report published by the Centennial only 50% of Mechanical Engineering Technology design fast track graduates are working in a field related to their studies. Now thats a risk I cant afford to take. There must be something wrong with the course of half of the graduates cant find a job.Sadly they did not publish the date of Industrial "privacy legislation" whatever that means!

thats a very wrong approach. If u start driving a truck u will never get out of that job and be stuck as lots of people have. one reason is ur not working in ur field so as time goes by employers would be reluctant to hire you. you have to make the right choice and keep ur goals clear. I feel masters is always the right choice its good for PR its good for job and good for ur personal growth. All the consultants will force to go to a diploma or PG diploma not a good idea unless u cannot get into masters or ur not good at studies.

50% out of those will be under paid and working on job that they are over qualified for.

to avoid complications, kindly apply for your visa with what the embassy wants which is a progression.
when you get your visa you can easily change program to whatever you want.

apply for the vsa with PEME at fanshawe and change to the diploma program when u have ur visa....
