Our puppy was rescued from California too. I don't know the actual steps in getting him to Canada but I'm pretty sure there is a way to do it. Best luck!

We brought a dog to Canada, I believe it's the same procedure with cats. After our arrival at Toronto Pearson we were directed to Immigration & Border Services. When they checked our dog's registration book, they only looked at the Rabbies vaccination's validity. Then they asked me to pay 30 dollars + tax for bringing a live animal to Canada. That's it.

It's not necessary but if you have a letter from your current vet stating that your cat is healthy, all vaccinations are done and the pet is OK for travel that will help you at the border and for the cat's future in Canada.

All our Pup needs to enter Canada is proof of a rabies vaccine. You might want to check out the exit requirements though. I know that we have to fill out some forms and probably pay a fee to 'export' an animal from the Philippines.

thanks guys! i figured there was some sort of fee for it and that theyd need something from the vet just to make sure shed healthy and not diseased or anything. i havent brought her to the vet yet. i kind of just found her, and she was very skinny and frail and needed to eat so bad, shes been inhaling everything i give to her so she must have been neglected for a while. otherwise she seems healthy and normal and clean, not like she was out on the streets for a long time or anything. she just needed some love and shes been the happiest kitty ever since : ) i was going to wait til anything went wrong to bring her to the vet just cause the vet is so expensive and i dont want to waste a trip there if nothings wrong with her but i think i should just in case.

Hey there! I recently brought my cat with us from the UK to Canada, and it's actually pretty straight forward. Here's what you'll need!

1. Rabies Vaccination - You'll need this vaccination, and I recommend you get it as soon as possible. On the certificate, you'll want to make sure that the vet has described the pet in a detailed fashion to make sure that it seems to be the same pet when it's being inspected! In our case, we had her microchipped too as she's a pretty common looking wee thing!

2. This one is dependent on how you travel, and i'm not sure if it applies to you, but it might help others so I'll put it up! If you are flying, you will need a "Fit to Fly Certificate" which basically states that the animal is healthy, of the correct weight and is not a threat to the health of other animals or itself. Most airlines state whether they require this and most do. In our case, our airline never mentioned they needed it but I got it just to be safe. Sure enough, it was required! So I'd recommend it. Also, flight can be very stressful for a cat and in some cases airlines will not fly at certain times of year, to certain destinations as the hold temperature may not be safe.

3. The fee. As has been mentioned already, a CBSA Officer will check the pets details and send you to a desk to pay the fee.

I'm not sure if you have her insured yet but I would highly recommend you get pet insurance from Trupanion! Far and away the best pet insurance providers in the US and Canada. You will be very grateful one day if she ever gets sick.

All the best!

We arrived with our cat last May, at the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Airport in Montreal, and we were not charged any fee. They did ask to see the vet certificate and that was it.

That's weird. It's a Federal Government fee so you should have been charged, but that's good for you!

Maybe Its a waived federal fee in Quebec so everybody else in the country can pay double?

Hi DGT! More and more in common with you the more I read!

What airline did you use to bring the cat over? How much extra? Where did you get a suitable carry case?

Many thanks!

Perhaps we're twins???

We flew Air Transat from Glasgow to Toronto (I'd recommend them for cheap flights!), the cost was $275 dollars, and we got her carry case from Amazon! With the case, you need to make sure it's IATA approved. It was about £40 in our case!

P.S Here are some links.

Maybe - did you grow up in a town where it rained 90% of the year? Do you love booze and Fish suppers? If it weren't for moving to Canada would your life expectancy be around 60? then maybe we are twins!

thanks for the links. can't imagine how stressful just getting to the airport is going to be with all possessions and pet in tow!

I grew up in Glasgow. So I think the life expectancy is about 29? Crap, i've only got 4 years left!

Hehe. You know, it wasn't really stressful but it was very sad. My wife absolutely loves Glasgow and Scotland and we had built a reasonable life there. Lots of good friends (who we really started to appreciate in the last few weeks there), and lots of good memories. So the sadness of it all superseded the stress.

P.S I love booze. On our going away party the night STARTED with me and my best mate drinking rum straight from the bottle. I don't think I need to tell you how it ended.
