When my husband is able to land, we want to get his work tools shipped up from California.

Anyone have a similar situation? What company did you use to transport the tools etc.. here? and the cost?

Do you have to pay duty on used tools you would be bringing from the US to Canada?

Thanks!

On work tools there is taxes and duty to be paid. (Can't be included in settlers effects)

We just did the same, but my husbands tools were in New Zealand (we used TNT Freight). If you can get away with it use USPS because brokerage charges are much cheaper.

If the tools are not made in USA or Canada, NAFTA doesn't apply, so you'll pay up to 6% on declared value and brokerage fees. You have to declare a value on it no matter what. UPS will have the highest brokerage charge, Example. I just bought a 200$ poster from Georgia, and had to pay 15$ duty and brokerage.

I do this for a living.

It's a personal affect, so on the declaration form put 'Personal Tools' but put a value on it (for insurance especially) cuz if Damage or loss package occurs, and you put a low value on it, that's all they'll replace it for.

IF you need help with Tarriff numbers PM me ... Shipping is about 30% of my job and I mostly do international
