Bringing household items to Canada

Hi experts,

I did my first landing as a PR holder (in Skilled Immigrant category) in 2009 and returned after 2 weeks. In 2010 I returned to Canada, again temporarily and returned to where I am.

I am hoping to move in permanently in mid 2011 for the first time with the intention to live in Canada for more than 12 months.

I filled up the B4 form during my first landing with a list of goods to follow. That list included all household furniture, Kitchen ware, antiques, display items etc etc. I remeber showing approx. value against each item. I also attached photos of special items such as antiques.

My question is ; if I bring some item say a new (and not used) bed, a cupboard or a set of cooking pots in its original packing purchased say 3-4 months ago but unused, will they impose duty and tax on them?

Remember, I have listed on the B4 form signed during my first landing in 2009, a) Bed ..... CAD 400, Cupboard.......CAD 550 etc etc.

What I understand from the CBSA guidelines (Immigrating or Returning to live in Canada section), I will have to pay duty and tax on such items.

Please confirm.

Yes, if they were not on the original list (or, I think, if they are new and unused, whether listed or not, with the exception of wedding presents) they are subject to duty and tax. Whether or not the tax will be imposed I can not say. I was carrying a humidifier valued at about $60 and some small Christmas gifts. The did not tax those items or look at any of the contents I had packed in a u-haul truck.

They will most likely ask the question specifically. The custom's officer asked me... "Are you bringing in any items that were not included on the B4 list?" and "Do you have anything listed that will be imported at a later date?"
