Bringing Computer Over the Border

My fiancee and I will be driving over the US border this April and we're hoping customs lets her stay with me for 6 months so we can get married and send in the PR app, etc. She wants to bring a few things over the border with us when we come and one of them is her new iMac computer.

Does anyone know anything about bringing an item like this over the border? She'll be leaving it in my apartment since it's our intention that she stays here in Canada indefinitely. Will we have to pay a duty? Will it be confiscated?

thanks :)

The iMac & many such other goods in person shouldn't be a problem. Fill-up the form B4A [Declaration of Goods]. There r no charges for anything & everything of personal use, for the 1st landing [except certain restricted/banned items, check the CBSA site].

She is a visitor, doesn't require a B4.

well it looks like her dad step-dad is going to ship it up to us after she comes up so I guess that makes things simpler, right?

Keep in mind CBSA can search your hard drive if they want to. U.S. CBP has even been know to seize laptops so they can copy its contents and return them later at some unspecified future date. :(
