Bringing car from United States

Hello,

I'm going to be a masters student at Carleton University in Ottawa this fall, studying for two years. I was hoping to bring my car with me, but I had a couple questions.

Currently the car is in my father's name, but I will most probably be buying it from him before I move up at the end of the summer.

From what I've seen, it looks like I can "temporarily import" my car with me, how do I go about doing that? It's my understanding that I simply declare it at the border, and off I go? I've read that car insurance is mandated for drivers in Ontario, how do I go about getting that? I also have a DL from New Jersey that will be valid for the duration of my stay, do I need to get an Ontario DL?

Also, I will be moving in with a friend up in Ottawa, and I saw that I would be the only one allowed to drive my car. Is there any way to allow for him to drive it as well? Could I formally import my car so we could both drive it? I figure there would be fees involved with that, but I don't really care about doing that.

Thanks for reading! Any help would be super appreciated
