Hi, I am a permanent resident in Canada since 2010. I'm waiting to become a citizen soon. I am here by myself and my whole family is back home in Europe. I have a brother, 17 years old, and I'm planning to bring him here with a study permit. He is 17 now and turning 18 in July. He has good English skills. I myself make around $35k a year and I live with my boyfriend. I'm not really sure if me living here affects him getting approved for a visa in any way. It's really important that I bring him here this year. Also, would declaring our income together with my boyfriend help? I don't know much about this, and I really want it to work out. All your advices/comments are greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows what colleges are better for international students in the GTA area ::). Thank you

Before he can apply for a study permit, he will first need to be accepted by a school in Canada. So the first step is for him to apply and be accepted by a school in Canada. Once he is accepted by a school in Canada, he will have to apply for a study permit and also prove he has enough money to pay for his studies in Canada. Tuition fees for foreign students are expensive. So he will need to show a bank balance (or loan) totalling $25,000 (or more, depending on his tuition) to cover his expenses and be approved for study permit. If you have further questions - post them to the International Students section of the forum.

Thank you for your reply. He wants to apply at a college and we are preparing for that, just wasn't sure what's the next step. I also didn't know that there was an international students section.
