How much time must he spend in the US between visits?

If he is going to be staying with me, will he need to show proof that he has a certain amount of money?

Will they be likely to allow him in? His parents live in the US... I'm not sure if that will satisfy a border agent though, considering I live here in Canada...

We're considering getting married at the end of 6 months and applying for his PR under the spouse category after he goes back to the US. Do we have to/should we inform border services of this intention?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi i'm in a bit of the same situation though i've travelled all the way from the UK to Canada and back 4 times and i've being staying for about 2 months each time. As long as he got proof that he lives at an address in the US and maybe a bank statement and a return ticket (otherwise he won't be allowed in) other things he can bring is a letter from his employer (if he's working obviously) these are the things i always bring with me when i'm coming to Canada though i don't work.. but the most important thing is that he can show he's going to return to the US again! Hope this helps :)

What if he's driving? He won't have a return ticket. And he's planning on quitting his job... is there anything else that he can use to assure them of his return? And how long must he stay in the US before he can come back?

I've only got experience from arriving by air but i'm assuming as long as he can prove that he's living with his parents and that he's got money enough to support himself or your bank statement showing that you got enough money to support him. It can be hard to get proof but for example a letter showing he's returning home maybe a doctors appointment or something like that? He's a visa excempt so it shouldn't be too hard to get in here.

and when you ask how long he has to stay in the US before he can come back because he could extend his stay if he's granted 6 months he can extend it to a further 6 months. But i don't think there are any rules for that unless it's going the US and immediately going back the very next day.

Are you aware that he can apply to extend his visitor status and apply for an additional 6 months? You can do it online and I think it costs around $75, or at least it did in March when I applied. He can then stay in Canada on 'implied status' until immigration make a decision. The more he goes and comes back, the likelihood is at some point he's going to get stopped and questioned further. I arrived in July 2010, flew back for a short visit to my homeland, came back in September 2010, then applied to extend my stay for 6 months in March 2011. I stayed in Canada until July 2011, flew back to my homeland for another short break, and upon entry in August 2011 back into Canada, I got grilled further by immigration at the airport. I explained I was about to submit a common-law spousal application - the officer was very nice and understanding, and allowed me through. I too am unemployed. She said that if I was to leave again, then I should ensure I had all my PR application paperwork on my person.

As far as I know there is no specified amount of time he needs to spend in the US before returning, but just be careful that if he makes frequent trips home, it will likely at some point flag up on his record and they may question him. Far better I woudl suggest is for him to make the initial 6 month trip, apply to extend his visitor status, get married during this period and submit your application. He may need to extend his status again, but it will be easier to leave Canada and return if he can at least show documental proof that he has a spousal PR application in the system.

What's your situation? Are you married? Do you have an application already submitted? I expect they will pick you up on it at some point, and they will want to know that there is an end in sight to your going back and forth so often i.e. that you are in the process of becoming a permanent resident.

well we haven't started anything yet to be quite honest with you. i just arrived back to England where i live today and i'm coming straight back in less than 3 weeks.. so that's what i'm thinking might raise a flag just the fact i'm travelling so frequently. we're going into common-law soon though but ergh am i confused about it all.. i'm about to obtain an IEC visa and then we'll either get married or go the common-law way :)
