We have been dating online for a few years now. We have visited in person a few times in the last 1 1/2 years, each time for a week or more at a time. We are now wanting him to move from US to Canada and start off with a Student Visa. We do plan on getting married but not right away. I have been reading that he has to have his whole year financial expenses (tuition and living expenses) in his bank account to be approved. Is this true? What if I want him to move in with me and he wouldn't have to worry about financial expenses (as I live in low income housing and its based on income), he will have tuition/book money saved up. Thanks!

Re: Boyfriend coming over for student visa

Yes - it's true. In order to be approved he will need to show that he has sufficient funds to cover first year tuition and also $10K in living expenses. It doesn't matter if he will be living with you - he still needs to show the $10K. Keep in mind that he will be paying foreign tuition fees. This means the funds he will have to show to be approved will likely be $25K or more.

If he only shows enough funds to cover tuition and books - he will be automatically refused.

You should also speak with someone in social services about having him move in with you into low income housing. This housing is meant for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It may create problems if your boyfriend moves in and takes advantage of a benefit he is not entitled to use.

Ok thanks! Im not on social services (income assistance) but I was kind of wondering about that too

I understand that. However you are living in low income housing which is a benefit given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents only. You should speak with someone (in social services?) to make sure you don't end up violating the terms of your living arrangement by having someone live with you who is not entitled to this benefit.
