In IMM5533 (checklist), "Supporting Documents for Sponsored Persons", question 1:

"Birth certificates or baptismal certificates for yourself and all family members, whether they are accompanying you to Canada or not"

My partner does not talk to her father. Can we simply write this on a separate sheet to explain why we can't provide a document?
Actually, we do have a copy of his old expired ID card. Should we add it as a substitute?

"Copies of national identity cards (for yourself and all family members, if applicable)"

How do I know if it's applicable? Does it mean ID cards for those coming along to Canada?

Thanks, everyone.

From the guide:

Family members - An applicant’s closest relatives, in the context of an application. It is defined as a spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, and their dependent children.

You do not need the birth certificate of her father, or any other ID from him.
'Family member' for the purposes of the CIC forms for spousal sponsorship means the spouse or common-law or conjugal partner, and any dependent children. It does not mean what we usually think of as family members, such as parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.
There are places that ask about parents, so you do list them there. The Additional Family Information form does want information about 'other' family - parents, all children, and all siblings.

I have a similar situation. I My wife has a son but doesn't have custody and has no plans to bring her son from Thailand to Canada. Her ex husband has custody and won't give her access and I doubt she would be able to obtain a birth certificate for her son. Will this cause a problem or delay with my application if she isn't able to obtain a birth certificate for her son.
