Hey guys!

Myself and my fiancé are originally from Birmingham, UK. However, I possess a Canadian passport. After travelling the world together after getting engaged we have found ourselves in Toronto, a city I am extremely familiar with.

Long story short is we want to stay. I know all about spousal sponsorship and sending an OWP application at the same time etc but sponsorship is expensive.

That is our eventual plan but in 3/4 months when we can afford it. I was just wondering, in the meantime is there anything we can do so my fiancé can legally work, can we apply for a work permit without sending spousal sponsorship application as well?

She’s happy to stay on visitors but we just worry about healthcare etc and would rather not be limited to cash in hand jobs for her whilst we save.

Student visa maybe?

Any advise greatly appreciated.

Is she 30 or under given the IEC program for 2019 is due anytime soon to open and that is a 2 year open work permit.

You talk about a study permit but assume you realise international students get charged approx 15000 - 18000 dollars per year so makes the affording sponsorship look a cheap option. Even if you found an employer to support an LMIA for a work permit still comes at some cost and takes months.

Any work cash in hand for example as a visitor would be illegal and if found out put the whole PR sponsorship in doubt.

There are a few travel insurers in the UK that sell policies for people already travelling.

So other that applying for inland with a spouse work permit which by the way assumes you are either married already or can prove common law given there is no such thing as fiancé status seems the options are limited. Plus seems you have been planning this since 2014.

Best option is to submit the inland sponsorship application as soon as you can and include the OWP so that you can kick off the 4 month waiting time for the OWP.

Student visa isn't feasible since it sounds like you're short on cash and international tuition fees are extremely high (she would need to show a bank balance of $25K+ just to be approved). You are also likely too late for her to be admitted into a program for the January semester.

IEC (working holiday visa) is a viable option provided she is the right age. However the UK program is always oversubscribed (so no guarantee of being selected) and it takes time for the application to be processed. To be approved / issued the visa at the border, she will have to show that she has around $2,500 in funds and also purchase 2 years of health care insurance to cover herself in Canada.

Again, best option is to get the spousal sponsorship application in asap.

You mean "limited" to working illegally? Little tip: when a person wants to immigrate to a country, working illegally in that country is generally a bad idea...
