Hello, just another quick question.

My fiance (Canadian citizen) and I (German) officially qualify as common-law (having lived together over 3 years) and are currently engaged with plans to marry next August. I've read on here that some say it is not a good idea to mention being engaged on the common-law application or it could get shelved until you are married or sent back. Should we mention our engagement on our application or omit it?

We mentioned our engagement in our common-law app, and had no problems. Common-law is a legal status so CIC can't force you to wait until you're married to process your app.

Thank you Rob_TO! :)

I just had another quick question. With regards to writing "Not applicable" on questions that's aren't applicable to me - since I am filling out the forms electronically, and certain questions become not fillable or grayed out, I assume I don't have to hand write "Not applicable" on the space after I print the form, correct?

Just reading on here and also the guide says not to leave any blank spaces, but if a question is grayed out, you couldn't fill it out anyway? I hope this makes sense.

If it's already greyed out then no need to put anything. If it's left just white and you don't fill something in, better to write N/A or cross out the section. It's fine to have some things in pen.

I also added a few items in pen to my printed forms i.e. for ones with dates that were ongoing, i would type in today's date on the form but then wrote in "to present" in pen on the forms.

Thank you again Rob-TO! You are very helpful and I appreciate the time you take to answer my questions :)

Sorry, just have a few more questions...

I will be leaving Canada on Dec. 14th, 2014 as my work permit expires then, and will be returning to Switzerland to live. My spouse and I want to send the application in before I leave.

1) With regards to the IMM0008 form, Question #10 - Current Country of Residence, would I put Switzerland as that is where I will be by the time they look at this application?
2) If so, how do I enter that in the dates column? It won't let me add a future dates, so would I just validate the form, print, and write the date in by hand?
3) On the same form, under Contact Information - For residential address, I should put my address in Switzerland. For the mailing address can I leave it as the Canadian one, where my spouse lives, along with her phone numbers? She will also be my appointed representative.

Thank you in advance!

1. Put where you will be at the time you submit the application.
2. You can write a date in by hand after printing but on that form in question it generates a barcode based on the values you enter so it will just mean CIC has to enter that date by hand. Not a big deal.
3. Are you staying in Switzerland until you receive COPR? I believe they send out the COPR to the applicant's residential address but I could be wrong.

Thank you andrew-brit for your reply! Much appreciated!

Well I hope to come back to Canada next Spring to stay with my spouse for a couple months as a visitor but yes for the most part I will be based out of Switzerland.

Do you think I should just write a letter to put with my application to explain that I will be in Switzerland come Dec. 9th and to put my new address?

For form IM 0008, for the signature space on the last page, do I just type my name and enter date, and then validate? I'm just wondering how to actually hand sign the document?

There is no need. After you actually move back, you can update CIC with your new address. The COPR will be sent to the MAILING address that you give, so if you are going to be in Switzerland, then you should put a Switzerland address. Otherwise, your COPR will be sent to your partner in Canada who would then have to mail it to you.

It's been awhile since I've looked at that form but I believe you should be able to validate it with those fields blank, as you need to actually sign it by hand.
