Hi all,

Ok here is the situation :

I am going to canada as a student, my scholarship provider will only issue student assistance once they see a student visa (temp res)

On the other hand I might be getting the PR (if all goes well about the same time)

- Will I be able to get a Temp res visa on the same passport that got the PR on? to show to the scholarship provider?

- If so, will I be able to consider my arrival in canada a landing?

- Could it be done the other way around, temp res stamped then PR?

- If the PR is ready to be stamped after I am in Canada, I understand that I can send in the passport (after interview) to the concerned embassy and have it stamped, do I have to leave the country and come back? I hear I can just get the formalities done at a Canadian port of entry without leaving Canada to another country.

- the other option if the PR takes longer and I am already in Canada, my studies will take years and years, when is the best time to ask for my case to be transferred to Buffalo?

sorry for the hypothetical questions, but don't want to make a mistake that cost me either the scholarship or the PR

best wishes

Sounds complicated. You might be able to get a student visa before you get PR but I am almost certain that they would not give you one after you get PR because they would basically say that you are PR and don't need it.

If you have a student visa already, then get a PR visa before you go to study, you can land as a PR. If you get the PR visa later, you have to officially land later. In some cities, you can "land" at the local CIC office. I saw a post on a messageboard where a person had landed in the city of Edmonton at the CIC office and he said the criteria was that you had been in Canada for a year to be able to do that. You would have to ask at your CIC office. Otherwise you would have to leave and come back. Many people just drive to the border. The border is usually not too far from most Canadian cities.

I am not sure what you mean by if your studies take years and years. Do you mean that you don't want the PR until your studies are done? Or you think your PR will take that long? You don't really have control over when you get PR once you apply. Once they issue a PR visa, you have a time limit to "land" and then you become PR. If it's taking longer than you thought, I don't think they usually transfer files between offices but you can ask about it. You could also withdraw and apply again. As a student in Canada, you would be allowed to apply for FSW after a year in Canada without being on the list of 38 occupations.

thanks leon for sharing your thoughts in this complicated situation, thats what I was thinking
now I am one of the few people who hope that their PR takes longer.

what I meant by studies will take years and years, was that I will be in Canada as a student for many years.

when you say driving to the border, do I have to enter the US? because many students are not given US visa until they have completed a year at a Canadian University.

are you sure about the file transfer? I understand that some poeple on this forum applied for a transfer and nothing happened, but once in Canada I am not sure I will have an easy access again to all the documents I have already prepared to be sent.
my worry is the transfer, as I can always send out my passport to be stamped (a bit ahead of myself here, but do not want to get stuck, specialy that it is not just me applying, it is the whole family, would be a hassle to fly back)

thanks again for your help

and good luck for everybody

I have seen posts of people stating that you do not have to enter the US at the border, you just tell the US border guards that you came to the border to do Canada immigration paperwork and don't wish to enter the US. They will then turn you around and send you back to Canada.

I am not sure about the file transfer but from what I have heard, it's uncommon.
