When I moved to Canada, I first went with RBC for banking. RBC is a very good bank but I want new immigrants to understand that they are not the only option. I found the following two banks to be very useful:
Alterna Savings: they tend IMHO to have lower banking fees. If you are an employee and want to have a side business, they are also very supportive with micro loans unlike the big banks.
Tangerine: I like tangerine (owned by Scotia Bank) because while other banks are looking for ways to gauge and take from you, they are looking for ways to give. You can earn $50 when you open a new account (and you dont even have to operate it, no hidden fees) - tangerine.ca If you look at the website and want to sign up, use this referral code: 38948910S1
ICICI: Orginally an Indian bank. Way cheaper rates for sending and receiving money.
