Hello,

I am on a visitor's visa and been living with my partner for about 4 months now. I have already opened a bank account on my name and a joint account with my partner.

Will this hurt my application for extension? I will be applying for my first extension in a few days.

Should I just close both accounts before applying?

Thanks for any input.

Can't you just not mention the bank account in your application?

I wonder if that is also possible as I can see closing an account is also easy, in case your application is rejected.

Will it be seen as a sign that you are planning to stay indefinitely?

I want to know the right answer to this question before I send my extension request :)

If you don't mention the bank account, CIC will not even know it exists. So i don't understand why you're worried. Unless the application form specifically asks "Do you have a Canadian bank account", then just don't mention it.

I may need to mention this as I also need to prove I have means to support myself, in addition to my overseas bank account. I also plan to attach my partner's salary slip and bank account info.

so yeah, I wonder if this is right.

Any similar situations??

I just answered all the questions online until I got to the part where it asks for proof of funds to support stay in Canada.

One of the documents accepted is a Canadian bank account in your name, when money is transferred to Canada.

I guess, I answered my own question? ???

It really doesn't matter to CIC if you have a bank account here or not. Many foreigners have Canadian bank accounts or investments.

Wait a minute. You are going to include your partners pay stubs as a proof that you have the ability to financially stay in Canada but you are afraid they will see a joint account with this partner as a bad thing? You are making way more out of this extension than you need to. CIC doesn't give 2 damns about a shared account with your partner. What they care about is are you financially able to support yourself if they grant you and extension and will you leave the country at the end of your stay. Give them adequate proof of both situations and you will be fine regardless of your shared accounts. Just remember, if you close these accounts now and then later on down the road decide to have your partner sponsor you as common law, you'll then have the joy of trying to explain to CIC why you closed that account down because in that situation it WILL matter to CIC if you have a joint account with your partner.

Keep the bank account. It's a strong relationship proof for CIC when you apply for PR
