Does anyone know for sure whether further background/criminal checks are done on the sponsor after the file has begun being processed in the overseas visa office? Or is that all done in Mississauga before it's sent to the overseas visa office? I would think this would all be complete before the file is sent overseas; otherwise, why give a sponsorship approval only to have it questioned later?

Anyone know?

I don't think the sponsor goes through background checks. Only the applicant does. The visa office checks that the relationship is genuine and usually, that's all about the sponsor they look into. In the case when the sponsor is living abroad, it's also the visa office who examines the proof that the sponsor intends to move to Canada with the applicant, Mississauga doesn't check that.. If this is lacking, then they could still refuse, even though the sponsorship was approved.
