background check date

I'm about to send in for my background check and I see that it could take up to 16-18 weeks to receive the results.

Besides just wanting to get it back asap so I can continue the application process, what would be example(s) of the a reason why I would need it by a certain date?

Because you're applying for immigration and you have deadlines to meet.

They don't actually check.

We are just putting together my wife's application and we found out that this FBI background check (she's American) will take 16-18 weeks! Do we need this completed in order to send it along with the initial application? I'd really rather not add 3+ months to this process!
