Hi to all,
This is my first post here and I am not entirely sure that I am even posting in the right forum. I apologize if it's not in advance. Basically, I have been in Canada for 4 yrs as a university student (Student Permit). After I finish my B.A., I plan to go through the teaching program up here as well. I am a U.S. citizen.
A few things have changed though, and I am not sure what to do. My fiancee (been together 2.5- almost 3 yrs) are expecting our first child together. My fiancee is from the area and is Canadian.
My son will arrive in about 2 months and will be born here in Canada. I want him to have dual citizenship because I am still very close to my family in the U.S. so we will be going down there quite often for visits etc....but I really don't know where to start.
My son wasn't planned but his father and I are thrilled that he's on his way now. We just want to make sure that we have all the information so we will know what to do once he is here.
Will my son be Canadian automatically because he will be born in Canada and has a Canadian father? Or will my son be American because of me and the fact I am only in Canada on a Student Permit? Is dual an automatic thing or will he have to be registered with one of the countries? I asked a border agent this when returning from my trip home and he told me to call the U.S. Embassy in Halifax for starters. I have, but it's been 3 days and I've not gotten my call returned.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? Thanks a bunch!
