Dear All

Qorax has explained how to fill the B4 form in detail, however I have 2 questions

I plan to first land in canada with my family for short time -- 2 months and then return permanently after 2-3 years

1. In form B4, ther are four classification type -- which one will I Tick now in accompanying goods B4 and which one will I fill in B4 GTF ?

Qorax mentioned some 'Newcomer' Box, but thats not present in the form

2. The form requires a canadian address, but our initial canadian address will be temporary as in a hotel which would change to some other address in future -- so should we just put the hotel address or should we put address of our relative who is permanently settled there ?

Thanks

Use "Settler" as you are not yet a "returning resident". I would suggest that you use "C/O" and your relatives address. A hotel address is not really suitable in case CBSA need to send you anything.

Thanks a lot Zardoz

You mentioned Settler -- but settler says one has to have the intent to settle in canada for the period of atleast 12 months -- if we are initially arriving for short landing of 1-2 months --

then in that case for both Accompanying goods and GTF lists should we mention 'settler' ?

Settler is correct as it's the only exemption that you are entitled to.

Thanks, but zardoz what about the intent to stay for 12 months ?

Isnt a better option to not submit GAL (since its intentional short landing) and to submit GTF (which would be intentional long term landing) ?

In theory you are absolutely correct. However, my experience with CBSA went something like this...

Me: Here is my B4 for Goods Accompanying and here is the B4 for Goods To Follow.
CBSA: It's too long (10 months) since you "Landed" and I won't accept them.
Me: But the document clearly states "intent to stay for 12 months" for Settler... Etc...
CBSA: Don't care.
Wife: I am a Returning Resident - put his in with mine instead.
CBSA: OK, that's acceptable.

We got lucky as my wife is a Canadian citizen, previously resident in Canada and had been out of the country for 9 years.

I *could* have argued and demanded to see a more senior officer at Pearson but there was already an "incident" happening further down the hall and I wasn't going to push my luck.

YMMV.
