Hi - we are US citizens and taking our cars up to BC. We will be there on a work permit, so will not be "importing" our cars. Do we need to get Canadian auto insurance or will our US auto insurance be good there? Also, do we have to register our cars there too? I think I read somewhere that we can keep our US registration for the time the work permit is good for or something like that...but I can't remember where I read that.

Thanks!

It depends on how long you will be staying in BC. If you are going to be there for more than a year you will have to register your cars and obtain a BC drivers' license. If it is less than 12 months, no registration is necessary. It's not exactly strictly enforced and would only be a problem if you get pulled over and a cop does a thorough check (and they seldom do unless it's for a serious offense like DUI) and realizes how long you have been in Canada.

As for insurance, you will have to check with your US insurance company whether they provide insurance coverage in Canada like if you get into an accident, etc..

if you get pulled over in a US car with a US drivers' license and show them US registration and insurance it is completely acceptable. And if you get a ticket, there's no escaping because Canadian and US systems are synced and your Canadian ticket will chase you all the way back to the States too.
