Aussie married to Canadian work visa

I was looking into the possibility of coming to Canada for 12 months. My wife and child are Canadian citizens. I am an Australian citizen.

What visa would I need to work in Canada during my stay? How long is the processing time? And what is the cost? I have looked at the website but am a little confused. I don’t think I should be applying for the visa that my wife would have to sponsor me as it would be a temporary move (12months).

Would it be a temporary visa with a work permit, as I am only looking at 12 months? I am a skilled CPA accountant in government.

I would be moving over with my wife and child (Canadian citizens) and we have extensive family over there. Thanks

There is no work permit you qualify for simply by being married to a Canadian or through having a Canadian child.

One way of qualifying for an open work permit would be to move to Canada first with your wife and child. Once you are in Canada, your wife would then submit an application to sponsor you for permanent residency using the inland (within Canada) application route and include an open work permit application with the package. The OWP will be approved approximately four months after the entire application package is submitted. Note this route requires both of you to be in Canada before you submit the application. You cannot do this from outside of Canada.

If you are the right age, another option would be to see if you can secure an IEC/working holiday visa.

If none of the above work, then you would need to secure a full time job offer in Canada first and your employer would need to obtain an approved LMIA before you can qualify to apply for a closed work permit.

Hi
thanks for the response!
So if I went with the inland (within Canada) application route and include an open work permit application with the package it would take me 4 months to get it..
So if we went with 1 way tickets, wouldn't we be questioned? or would it be better to do 12 month open return tickets..as the plan would be to return after 12 months..which means I would only be able to work for 8 months..

Thanks for your help..

PS I was also given advice that my wife would have to sponsor me. If I apply from outside of Canada, I looked up that the cost would be $1000 and the processing time is 12 months..

Since your spouse is Canadian and you are accompanying her to Canada....as you r an Aussie...you do not visa..you can be on be TRV. However if you would like to work in Canada for 12 months legally...I suggest..once you are in Canada...apply for spousal sponsorship..and open work permit. Keep in mind...if you are sponsored by your partner, you are supposed to live in Canada 2 years out of 5 years to maintain your PR status unless and until you accompany your Canadian Citizen partner abroad. Still recommend being in Canada once in 5 years to ensure PR status is protected, renewed and maintained. you can write to me in case of more help.
