As a convicted felon, can I apply for Canada PR?

Hi guys, appreciate your input here.

In 2017, I was convicted in UAE for consumption and possession of weed (I had a joint with me). Due to strict laws, I was convicted for 2 years. I was luckily released on random early pardon within 6 months, followed by deportation to my home country. I was charged under felony category.

I recently got married to my wife who has her Canadian PR, and currently resides in Canada. My question is, will I be able to join her in Canada as I am her legal husband? Can I apply for PR?

If u have lived in uae for more than 6 consecutive months u also need to provide a police certificate from uae.

It will be shown in your criminal record. It’s up to to ircc how serious they take this offense.

Possessing illegal substances is the last thing u want in that region

Of course you can apply. Weed is legal in canada now. Explain the situation and you should be ok
That may not be the point. It is illegal in the UAE and it was illegal in Canada at the time the offence was committed. It depends on the actual conviction, as much as the circumstances. It's up to IRCC how to assess this. We can only guess.

You should get a good immigration lawyer. Imo, it is inadvisable to apply on your own and just hope for the best.

Regardless of what Canada thinks of the fact you were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment at least there is one certainty that you would probably be inadmissible to the US.

Hard to say based on the conviction. Either you are fine - or you are inadmissible to Canada for five years and will have to wait until 2023 before you can apply for rehabilitation in order to be allowed to enter Canada.

Agree that it would be a good idea to speak with a lawyer. Good luck.
