Hi, I'm glad I found this site.

I have a situation where me-Canadian citizen, would like to bring (sponsor) my wife.
We are at this point on deciding on how to do that. I've read some threads that give me basic idea but my situation is specific.

I am a Canadian Citizen, my wife is a Russian citizen.
  • A month ago got married in New York and she went back to Germany to finish a semester
  • After that I arrived to Canada (after being 3yrs away in Germany)

I would like to find out:

1. Can my wife come to Canada (Ontario) as a tourist from Germany and then we apply in Canada for sponsorship and they let her stay for the duration of the process?
a) is it likely or not for her to get a runaround or some problems getting Visa and/or for arriving in Canada as tourist while she is married to Canadian?

2. Can she apply (and receive) work permit or study permit during the process?

Thank you in advance.

1. Assuming she is a Russian citizen, married to a Canadian it is unlikely that she will be issued a visitor visa (TRV) as her intention would be to remain in Canada permanently not just visit.
2. If she gets to Canada, then she will have to qualify the same as everyone else for a study/work permit. If you sponsor her "in Canada" then she submits an open work permit request with the application to Vegreville. Minimum of 5/6 months before it would be approved or refused.

wow.. so my only option seems to be submitting sponsorship application for her while she remains outside Canada.(?)

in addition I have another question, which country can she apply from, shes Russian citizen but she studies in Germany.

when she gets her interview does it have to be country of her citizenship(Russia) or residence(Germany)?

thank you.

If you apply outland and she has at least a 1 year student visa in Germany, you can opt to be processed either in Russia or Germany. If there is an interview at all, it will be in the location you are asking for your processing to be at.
