Hi all,
I am an experienced excavator operator and want to join an apprenticeship program in Canada for the same. Has anyone tried for it and succeeded? I would appreciate comments from experienced and successful apprentice. I'm also ready for red seal examination. Plz do leave your positive comments....thank you ..

The problem you will encounter with an apprenticeship program in Canada is the need to find a sponsor. These are, for the most part, employers willing to provide the mandatory on the job training associated with an apprenticeship. The schooling portion is generally 1-2 months during the year and the programs are 2-5 years long. In order to complete the apprenticeship, you would need to acquire a work permit if you were not a citizen or PR. That would likely be difficult, given the requirement for an employer to provide a LIMA and apprenticeships being essentially entry level work. An employer would likely face a significant challenge in proving there is no one in Canada capable of performing the work.

Thank you for your honest and immediate information. There a lot of companies which are offering apprenticeship opportunities as advertised on different sites.. I would like to know is it time worthy to approach them as excavator operator job are in high in demand in Canada. Also is it better to get a Red Seal Endorsement as I am an experienced excavator operator with more than 10 years of experience.

The majority of apprenticeships are only open to Canadian permanent residents and Canadian citizens.

In order to take an apprenticeships role, your employer must obtain an approved LMIA and you must then apply for a work permit. You can certainly reach out to employers to see if you can find someone interested in working with you. Make sure they are familiar with the LMIA process and willing to go through it. Without an approved LMIA, you cannot get a work permit.

Thank you for the information But What about the second question on red seal endorsement for excavator operator in particular.

I can't comment on that.

That would depend on the province. Apprenticeships are under the authority of each province. So depending on, assuming you had a job offer, which province your employer was in, a red seal may make a difference. In Alberta, excavator operators are not considered journeymen/tradesmen while in Ontario they are a regulated trade.
You would need to assess the benefit of the red seal program depending on where you are employed.
