Hi everyone,

My girlfriend (Brazilian) and I (Canadian) are travelling in the U.S and her current Canadian tourist visa will be expiring the end of February. Just wondering if the extension can be applied for while we are here in the U.S? It doesn't look like it but I thought I'd ask...

Also, I'm aware that come May 1st, Brazilians won't even need a visa anymore.
Also, as we are common-law, we are working on the application to sponsor but realize that could take a while to be approved so getting this extension is essential.

Thanks for you help.

If her TRV is expiring, then you will need to apply for a new TRV (not an extension). Yes - you can do this from the US.

Once visa restrictions are lifted, she will need to apply for an ETA to enter Canada.

Just spoke to some rep at the CIC and he said we can't apply for the extension in the U.S. He did say that it's possible the border guard will just stamp her an extension when we cross the border by car.
Thanks!

You're confusing two very different things - so it's difficult to answer your question. Because you are confusing two very different things - you also may not have been provided with the right answer by CIC.

You need to clarify if you are asking about the visitor visa itself expiring - or if you are asking about her allowed visit to Canada expiring (meaning that she was allowed in for six month when she entered Canada).

We're asking about how to extend a multiple-entry visitor visa while in the U.S. She has been to Canada twice with this visa already.

Then, scylla's first reply to you is already correct.

You need to apply for a brand new multiple-entry TRV. You cannot extend it.

Extensions only work if you are already physically in Canada and don't plan on leaving. All extensions do is allow you to stay in Canada longer for that single visit - then don't extend the actual TRV.

What she needs is a new TRV - not an extension to her visit.
