So, I have recently applied for permenant resident via family class, my husband is my sponsor. I have also already applied to extend my stay as a visitor in Canada, but my six-months aren't even up until January. However, recently I've been trying to find something to do during my long wait in Canada and have sent my resume out and gone to interviews and have a perspective employer very impressed and willing to work with me, even though I still need a work permit. In order to speed up the process of getting my initial work permit, I want to go a POE once I get the positive LMO and the Job offer in writing.

So I have a few questions...
I already plan to take documents to prove I can support myself and that I am a resident of the U.S. and have no criminal record. Would it hurt me to also bring a receipt for my permenant resident application?
Can I receive the work permit on the same day that I apply for it at the POE, specially Buffalo?
Does anyone have experience with this sort of situation and can offer some advice?

Thanks!

1. If you have an approved LMO and the position doesn't require a medical, you can go to any border point and apply for a work permit. You would need the LMO and your passport. The proof of apply for PR is not required but it won't hurt. It takes about 15 minutes to issue. You don't go to the office in Buffalo as you are a US citizen, you can get it at the border after "flagpoling"

The advice above is correct. They will issue your WP at the port of entry, then you can apply for your SIN number and Health card. It does not hurt to bring the receipt of PR application, bring your husband as well if you can, it is helpful to have the Canadian partner/spouse with you when you are dealing with any kind of visas. Good luck, I did it twice already and by my experinece it is risk free, the officers were nice and professional, no issues at all.

PMM & Ditta,

Thank you so much for your advice! My only question is what is flagpoling? I'm assuming it's where you go to the port of entry and not enter, just go over to the canadian immigration side? :)

SaugaBoss,

As far as I understand. You would need to go to a border point, and you can apply for it there. Someone mentioned it only took them 15 minutes. If you get a temporary work permit than it is only valid for the employer offering you a job. Once we pass the first stage approval of our permenant residence application we can apply for an Open Work Permit, which gives us the right to work for any employer we wish to. Once you get a temporary work permit you can apply for the SIN & Health card.

Yes, after you get the TWP you can apply for the SIN. But if you are in Ontario, there is a 3 month waiting period before you can apply for OHIP. In my case, they would not even allow me to apply before the completion of the 3 months. Others have said that they were allowed to apply, but had to wait 3 months for the card.
