Hello there!

My friend's husband is going to apply for a student permit next month and my friend said that she is accompanying. (Is this possible?) They are now gathering documents. I think the husband received the acceptance letter already. So if my friend's husband will apply for a study permit, what will be my friends visa? Is it a visitor visa, does it have an open work permit too?

Please enlighten me on this one, so I can give her advise on what to do... Thanks!

While Applying for his student permit he can also apply for an open work permit for his wife. Just need to make sure they have enough funds and in the letter of explanation say she will like to work to help pay expenses as long as that is the truth.

Hi.

Please check the link : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-how-documents.asp, 3d point.
It says, minimum amount that needs to be shown as fund while accompanying spouse who will be studying in Canada.
But, I would suggest to make list of expenses per month in the place of study.
Then multiply it by number of months spouse is planning to stay with husband.
And then try to show atleast half of that amount.
For ex :
If monthly expense is 2000 CAD, and if spouse wants to stay for atleast one year then amount you can show ( to be on safer side of VISA getting easily approved ) is : 12 * 2000 = 24000 / 2 = 12000 CAD.
In the link above, minimum amount to be shown is : 4k CAD per year per dependent which is very less for a person to sustain where monthly expense is 2k ! makes sense to show little more right ?
But If you can show about 10-12k CAD with a strong letter of explanation containing why you really want to travel and stay along with spouse would be making VISA officer's job easy to approve the OWP.
VISA officer will not have a reason for rejection if you have enough fund to support yourself ( not depending on spouse who is studying ) and have a strong letter of explanation.
According to me, you need not show 24000 CAD because you would be getting OWP. So, obviously if you can manage about 6 months, you will definitely get the job ! Then, it will be smooth journey.

Make sure you attach all requested documents, but extra effort on LOE and fund details would guarantee OWP !
ALL THE BEST..
CHEERS.
