Applying for Citizenship - Need advise on Name Change

Hello All,

I am going to apply for my Citizenship in Feb 2011.

I became PR in 2004 and went back to USA after my landing. I returned to Canada in 2007 permanently, now also living in Canada.

When I became PR in 2004, in my Passport, my entire name was in "Given Name". So in my Canadian PR, CIC has entered my entire name as "Family Name". There is no first name as per PR records.
I have requested to correct my name when I renewed my PR in 2010 , but as per CIC they cannot do that and advised me to apply for name change in Canada.

My question:

1. When I apply for citizenship, if I don't correct the name (name change) will it be a problem in future.

2.If I apply for name change before applying for citizenship, Do I need to apply for PR card again to correct that in CIC records?

Thank you.

I had a similar issue (assumed married name after landing )and below is what i did which worked ok

1- Apply for Citizenship using the names on your PR Card - CIC will not make name changes easily as they need to maintain the record as it is when you got landed. This is why they request you make sure all information is correct when you sign your record of landing.

2- After citizenship, i applied for my Canadian passport requesting for the new name to use. This was considerably easy to do as i supplied my marriage certificate and my other documents in my new name.

I hope this helps

Cheers

Thanks. But, my landing information was entirely correct. Now, however, I just want to change my first name completely -- you can do it legally and request a new PR card reflecting your new name. My concern is that at present I cannot do the same name change on my national passport. Thus traveling with a PR card and passport containing differing name information could cause problems -- I just need to hear from anyone of you whether it has indeed caused any hurdles in your travels.

IBM, I know this thread is really old, but if you get this, please do share your name change experience... I'd be interested to know.
Hi,

I have requested for name change in Citizenship application. I have received my test letter and also status in CIC website shows requested name. (Last name, First name).

I have also provided them my Health card, Driver license with my First name, last name printed on these cards in correct order.

I have received RQ on my citizenship application and provided all documents to CIC. I am waiting for the update from CIC.

Thanks
IBM.

I think you have to apply for name change with Province and provide the name change certificate to CIC. But please verify.

Thanks
