Hi,

I used to have a New York State License, how it expired more than 10 years ago.

Does anyone know which state in the US allows to have a US license on B1/B2 Tourist visa. I have a US social security number.

If you have a home country licence why would you need a US licence. Do you even have a US residential address ?

States do not determine benefits for temporary residents; the federal govt does. In this case, the DMV you apply to will place a query with USCIS, which will confirm to the DMV if you're eligible for a DL, regardless the state. Additionally, SSN is not a requirement to obtain a DL. There are visas that qualify holders for DL yet do not grant them a SSN.

The visas you mention are all temporary; B1, which is a business visa, gives entry under 6 months, for example. It is only logical to assume; the time the law allows you to drive in the US with a Canadian DL, is not far from the duration of these visas. So, with a B1/B2 visa, it's likely you do not qualify for a DL, in any state.

Some states provides D/L to temporary visitors (such as B1/B2 visa holders) such as Texas, Illinois...However, they do required proof of residence. In some cases, if you do not have prood of residence, you give a Residence Affidavit. I think its largely up to the each DMVs discretion.

Being a resident of Quebec, it takes a minimum of 13 months for me to get a license. My profession is Accounts/Sales/Marketing for which I am afraid employers might as for local license.

Usually if an employer badly needs you to have a DL, they will clearly list it among the qualifications for the job. Considering that you're in Quebec - I'm assuming, Montreal; a DL may be the least of your worries, because the public transport there is great. I've used it! And it's being expanded even more to the West Island area.

I wouldn't worry much about a DL, honestly. I understand your reasons though, particularly with marketing.

Thanks, however Texas dpes issues license to temp visitors. But the license will be only valid until the duration of the I-94 which will be 6 months on B1/b2 visa

You can get DL in New Mexico and Washington without any immigration papers. Chicago used to be on this list but they changed their policy recently. Many of my friends who ran out of status here but had SSN went to New Mexico or Washington and got DL there.
