Applying Common Law with my GF. When I do tax, should we do it as couple?

the question is on the title!!

I am just worried if we do separate, the government will raise a red flag?

Also, it is her first time doing it. She has been here almost two years now but she did not do the first one.

Thanks!

You don't need to do the taxes together, but you need to report your common-law status to the CRA (assuming you've lived together for at least 1 year now). CIC doesn't care about this though.

You can report your change of relationship status online on the CRA website.

CIC aside, according to tax law, if you are officially commonlaw, you need to declare it. SO basically, yes, you should file as a couple.

I actually included a screenshot of our CRA account showing we were commonlaw when I first thought about filing. Didn't think it would hurt to include.
