Hey guys,

I have Canadian citizenship and my son was born outside of Canada. I wanted to apply for a Canadian passport for my son and according to CIC website (1), I need to provide Canadian citizenship certificate to apply for passport, and in order to obtain the Canadian citizenship certificate, I can apply for it online (2) . I followed the instructions and was filling up the citizenship application form, and in the "Residence and Travel" section, there's a question "When did the minor become a permanent resident of Canada?" (4), and it's required field. However, my son hasn't been to Canada since he was born, and according to this page (3) on CIC, my son is automatically a Canadian citizen so I'm not sure why I still need to provide the date when he become a permanent resident.

Just wondering what is the date I should provide here? Thanks a lot!

Are you sure you are applying for Proof of Citizenship? I applied by paper before the online option came out so I don't know if the information you're inputting is for the account profile, but that looks like a question they would ask when applying for a Grant of Citizenship. I'm looking at the paper form for Proof of Citizenship, and there is no question on it asking about a child's residence and travel.

Thanks for the info! You are correct, I checked again on CIC website and realized in my situation I can only apply by paper. :)

There are two different types of application. PROOF of citizenship and GRANT of citizenship. Your child is already a citizen by birth and therefore you should use PROOF of citizenship. Sounds to me like you’re using the grant version.
