My daughter who is a Canadian citizen is currently living in New Zealand with her common law spouse and they are planning to come to Canada in 3 months. she wants to sponsor him for permanent resident status. in addition he wants to be able to work here as soon as possible. Should they apply now through the outland sponsorship or wait till they arrive and then apply via inland process. Which would be the best option to get a work permit approved quicker.

Assuming he is in the age range, the fastest way to get a work permit would be IEC.

My Daughter is 25 and her common law spouse is 26. They met in whistler 3 years ago and he was on an IEC work permit then. He is a New Zealand citizen. so i dont think he is allowed a second one.

No, he isn't allowed a second one.

If they wait and apply inland as soon as they get here, it will be July-August before he gets an OWP. He is advised not to leave Canada during the processing.

If they apply outland now, he will likely be done in the fall. With outland, there is no OWP but also no risk in leaving Canada.

Hello, I am russ22's daughter. I have several questions in regard to the family class, common-law sponsorship as this seems to be the only application we can apply to in order for him to return to Canada to live and work (he has already had a working holiday visa).

1. We are looking at applying inland for the common-law sponsorship in May, 2018. How long, generally, would it take for him to receive a work permit after applying inland? After receiving a temporary work permit, how long would it take for him to receive permanent residency?

2. If we receive permanent residency, is there a certain amount of time we must reside in Canada? If we decide to leave would we be able to return to Canada at a future time?

3. In the application, I need to prove that I can support myself and him. However, in New Zealand, he earns a higher income than me. By providing an up-to-date financial statement, proving my partner's current savings, would this be sufficient evidence proving that he can support himself while awaiting a work permit?
