Hello,

I am looking to apply for a work visa or a PR from Canada. I am a software engineer on a H1-B visa in the U.S. Here is my complete information:

Country of Citizenship: India
Country of Residence: USA
Age: 28
Visa type: H1B (expires May, 2017)
Occupation: Software Engineer
Work experience: 5 years as a software engineer in the US
Education
  • Master’s in Computer Science (U.S.A.)
  • Bachelor’s in Information Technology (India)

My U.S. visa expires in May, 2017. I want to be able to get a PR and hopefully a job in Canada before that time so that I can move there directly from the U.S. Could someone please guide me as to how to go about this? Should I apply for a P.R. or a work visa? Which is easier/quicker? What are my chances of getting a PR/work visa? How long does it usually take? Do I have enough time?

To qualify for a work visa you must first find an employer who is willing to offer you a full time job in Canada. That employer then needs to obtain an approved LMIA (this process typically takes several months). It generally tends to be difficult to find employers willing to go through the LMIA process - however some are successful. Again, the first step is to find an employer.

If you are interested in immigrating so that you can live in Canada permanently, you'll need to research Canada's immigration programs in detail. You can find this information in the link below. If you don't wish to do this research on your own, then I would recommend that you hire an immigration consultant or lawyer to assist you.

Thank you, Scylla :) I looked at the link you sent me, and it looks like I am eligible for Express Entry. I understand there's 2 parts to it, and that it takes up to 6 months once I get an invite, but is there a timeline for when people are getting their invites?

Do you know how long the whole end to end process takes?

And, how are the chances of getting through?

It depends how many points you have under Express Entry. As of now, no one with less than 450 points has been selected. I would recommend you start by calculating how many points you have to determine your chances of being selected. You'll also need to take IELTS and have your education officially assessed.
