Applied online, proved, then missed the mail returning my Passport

I applied online and then sent my passport to New York visa office. My application was approved on Apr 25, and my passport was sent back to me on the same day via the Express mail I included. For various reason (I couldn't find my tracking number and I never saw the notice USPS claimed to have left at my place) I didn't realize that it has been sent back to me until today. By the time I checked with the post office, they told me my mail has been returned to the sender (visa office) this morning.

Anyone knows what the visa office will do when they received the returned mail containing my passport? Is there anything I can do to get my passport back?

Is the mail still in transit? Isn't there a way you can reroute it by filing a ticket? Usually in Canada as long as it is still in transit they can reroute, dunno USA.
